GVMS Service

Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS)

The Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) is used to manage the movement of goods through certain UK ports and terminals, linking customs declarations to the vehicles transporting them. Hauliers travelling through GVMS locations require a Goods Movement Reference (GMR), which brings together the relevant customs references for a vehicle's journey. Bacsoft is registered for GVMS and provides GMR creation services to support freight forwarders, hauliers, importers and exporters moving goods through these locations.

Our team can generate Goods Movement References alongside your import or export customs declarations, helping ensure the appropriate references are linked to the vehicle before travelling. We also provide assistance with GVMS status checks and inspection notifications, helping you stay informed of any customs requirements affecting your shipment. Whether you require an individual GMR or ongoing support for regular vehicle movements, Bacsoft offers a straightforward service that complements our wider customs clearance operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about import customs clearance.

It is HMRC's online service that links a vehicle's registration to the customs declarations for the goods it carries, producing a Goods Movement Reference (GMR) that allows the vehicle to travel through participating ports and terminals.

Traders responsible for moving goods through a GVMS port or terminal must be registered. This is generally the haulier, but it can also be a customs agent. The haulier is responsible for creating the GMR, but can pass this to an agent such as Bacsoft.

Request it alongside your declaration.

A GB EORI number and a Government Gateway account. The business address must match the one on the Government Gateway account.

The GMR status will show whether the vehicle needs to report for inspection. Drivers can check this through HMRC's "check if you need to report for an inspection" service. We can help you act quickly on the result.

No. HMRC publishes a list of locations that use the service, and we will tell you whether your route is affected.
